Bank Holiday
Our first day in Cambridge is a very special day since
it is a bank holiday. Most of us didn't know the term 'Bank Holiday', but my host family told me that earlier in time, this was one of the only days
when the banks were shut, but nowadays, it is quite similar to a public holiday, expect for most of the stores are open.
Our first meeting point was at 10 am at the city cycle
hire, where we got our bikes. A lot of us didn't manage to get there in time
since we had to use the public transport, but in the end we all got our bikes
and made our way into the city. We stopped near a local market which marked
another meeting point and most of us got lunch there. There were many stands
representing different countries and offering international food. In the end,
most of us ate burgers, but the Options would have been boundless. ;-)
Afterwards we got a walking tour around the city of cambridge and had a look into many colleges. Luckily, our guide was very nice
and funny, but the heat was almost unbearable, so we used almost every
opportunity to have a seat among the shades. Most of us were very relieved when
the 1.5h tour ended because then we were free to explore the city on our own, which
is usually the only correct way of getting to know a city.
In the evening, all of us met in front of the Anchor
pub to have a welcome drink together, but sadly, there wasn’t enough space
for the 40 students of us. We then went to another well-known pub called The Eagle
which was from that point on, the meeting point every evening.
